Pivoting into UX: A Bad Idea?

How do I start a career in UX?

One of the most common dilemmas I encounter in my coaching sessions is the struggle to kickstart a career in UX. In a job market that appears to be overflowing with talent, what if you're brimming with passion for UX Design but find yourself at a loss for where to begin?

The UX industry is about to change, no question. It's not the big goldmine anymore, but I believe UX will always be an important component of any business. If you want to enter into this field or looking for ways to grow your careers, here are some inputs for self-reflection:

1. What is your motivation to change?

Before you jump into a (new) career path, become very clear about what you're looking for. Assess your current situation and reflect on:

  • What's working (what tasks in ym current job give my joy)?
  • What's not working (what tasks a draining my energy)?
  • What's missing (what would my ideal work day look like)?

2. Use your current expertise

UX is a big umbrella term and can mean so many things. Every organization is thinking differently about UX. Which also means: UX has room for many different skills. You can pivot into UX from software development, from copywriting, marketing, data analytics, project management... UX is more than design.

Reflect on your current work expertise and also your interests, then brainstorm how these skills could relate to UX. If you become clear about what you already have to offer, you can define your unique superpowers and stand out from the crowds.

3. Start in your current organization

Look closer at your current organization: where can you find opportunities to include UX thinking? Start small by, for example, doing quick usability tests to collect customer feedback or by sketching high-level wireframes to get ideas across. If your organization doesn't have a UX culture yet, it might be a big opportunity to create some change!
